The Howl is on break until late January. 

 

Thank you to all of the talented authors and artists who have submitted their work to The Howl this year! It has been a joy reviewing your pieces, and we are so proud to give them a home. The Howl wouldn’t be The Howl without your creativity and support.  

 

We will still be accepting new submissions, especially for our contest “Turning of the Tides,” so keep creating, though there will be a slight delay in response time. Contest deadline is February 20 (see below for more details).   

We appreciate your understanding, and we hope to hear from you soon. Enjoy your winter!

The Howl Magazine, a publication of the Writing program at Western Connecticut State University, accepts original work including creative nonfiction, fiction, poetry, photography, music, and all kinds of art from high school students grades nine through twelve. Written submissions are limited to 5,000 words. We will not accept any pieces of art or writing that have been published elsewhere, or that endorse racism, graphic sexual content, drug use, or prejudice of any kind. Any work that blatantly perpetuates violence or political propaganda will not be considered. We will also not accept any pieces with any amount of A.I. generation at any point in the creation process. See our Submission guidelines.

The staff of The Howl welcomes all high school students to submit to our second contest! Our theme is “Turning of the Tides.” Literal or figurative, send us some turbulent art. We will select one winner from each of the following categories (three winners total): 


– Prose, flash fiction or creative non-fiction (1,000 words or less)         

– Poetry (limit of one poem)         

– Visual Art (hand done, digital, photography, collage, etc.) 


REQUIREMENTS: 

  • For prose, please format your document in 12-point Times News Roman, doubled-space, and put the title of the piece on the first page of the document itself.
  • Submitters must be high-school students (ages 14-18) and must include a third-person bio with their submission (including your name, age, and a little bit about yourself). 
  • Any contest winners who are under 18 will need to have a permission slip signed by a parent or guardian before work gets posted. 
  • Work must be original (no A.I. usage of any kind) and exclusively submitted to The Howl.

  • If your work is accepted, you will need to fill out our consent form for your work to be published on our website. 
  • If accepted, you will not receive any sort of compensation for your work. 
  • Work created by A.I. programs like ChatGPT or Stabled Diffusion will not be published within The Howl. Please note, we will be examining all submissions with an A.I. detector.
  • We do not accept work previously published online, including social media. We will accept simultaneous submissions, but please withdraw if accepted elsewhere.  
  • We follow the CLMP (Community of Literary Magazines and Presses) Code of Ethics, and all submissions are reviewed by the Submissions team, the Editorial team, and faculty advisors.
